Hands-On STEM: Pumpkin Towers and Candy Corn Chemistry, Fun Science for Kids!
What's included
2 live meetings
50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Make science fun with candy! Grab your gumdrops and peppermints and meet me in the science lab! Day #1: Pumpkin Towers -We will discuss the different ways to build a tall tower from candy corn pumpkins and toothpicks. -As students work, they will use a worksheet to draw their plan and record their results. - Students will share what they want to build and what they think they will need to do to build it. Together we will discuss the importance of having a solid foundation and balanced supports on each side as they build and that trial and error will usually occur before reaching the desired result! -Depending on the length of build time, part of the worksheet may be completed after class and brought to class #2 to wrap up sharing our structures before beginning the next activity. Every group of students are different so this will vary from class to class. Day #2: Dissolving Candy -Students will discuss the structure of the candy corn. What they feel like, if they are hollow, and make predictions as to which liquid (cold water, warm water, milk, vegetable oil, vinegar) will dissolve the candy the quickest and which will take the longest. We will limit the time spent observing the candy dissolve to around 5 minutes to make observations together. Students will be encouraged to try this again at home for a long period of time to see how long it takes for them all to completely dissolve (or do some never dissolve?!) -As we discuss and conduct the experiment, students will have a worksheet to make their predictions and observations with. *Please see the supply list before enrolling to ensure that you have or can obtain these materials before class begins. If you do not have the materials for the second day, students can watch mine and still participate in making predictions, observations, and class discussion. The first day however they will need the supplies for the candy corn tower. Please message me if you have any questions!
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to plan, make predictions, and discuss their observations for each activity.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The water for the second day will need to be both warm and cold. Warm water from the tap is fine. Please do not bring boiling water to class. Just a cup of warm water before we begin!
Supply List
Pumpkin Tower - A bag of candy corn pumpkins. A whole bag will allow students to freely use as many as they need for their structure. -A pack of toothpicks (exact number depends on the structure being built, more is better just in case!) -Worksheet (shared before class starts) Dissolving Candy -5 candy corn pumpkins and 5 candy corn pieces -Clear cups filled 2/3 of the way full with each individual liquid: cold water, warm water, milk, vegetable oil, and vinegar. Please have these pre-filled before class begins. You can wait to do the warm water right before we start! -Paper towel to lay in front of the cups -Labels (I will provide labels of each liquid to lay in front of the cup if needed or you can write your own. I will take a picture the week our class begins to show the set up for class.) -Worksheet (shared before class starts) Please message me if you have any questions about the supplies!
