Beginner Level
Bring your magnet tiles to class and practice spelling words with tricky phonics patterns! These magnet tiles will serve as 'sound boxes' for us to practice spelling while breaking apart each sound in a word to try and figure out the correct phonics pattern (decoding and encoding). We are building a strong foundation of phonemic awareness (the skill that prevents many students from reading and spelling on grade level) and bridging the gap between phonemic awareness and phonics! Learning to spell the words is the cherry on top! In this hands-on spelling class, we will work on understand the 'why' behind combining letters and sounds to spell words correctly. We will learn how to decode words (break apart phonemes while reading), and encode words (listen for the sounds, phonemes, and apply phonics patterns when spelling). Research shows that a combination of hands-on activities such as manipulation, writing and reading all work together to help students retain information learned. This class is part 1 of a two part series. Part 2 will include multi-syllabic words, heart words (sight words), more advanced phonics patterns. 📒Weekly Homework: Each week students will be give a review sheet and a choice board for practicing their weekly phonics pattern. A spelling test will also be included if parents would like to assess their child's learning at home after working on the homework. 1. Weekly Review Sheet 2. Choice Board 3. Spelling Test 📕Phonics Skills: 1. CVCe words (a_e, i_e, o_e) 2. Beginning blends (bl, sl, sc, etc.) 3. Ending blends (nd, nk, nt, etc.) 4. Digraphs (ph, sh, ch, wh, th) 5. Students will show off their work by taking turns reading, everyone sharing their whiteboard or paper of words they have written and taking turns to play a review game. Many activities will be whole group, so all students have an opportunity to be involved. I am a licensed teacher in the state of Ohio with nearly 10 years of teaching experience. I have previously taught Title 1 Reading Intervention, 2nd grade, ESL and K-5th students in math and ELA. In my 2nd grade classroom, I incorporated a variety of hands-on activities each week to help my students master phonics skills by applying phonological and phonemic awareness skills. Each week, we would do a variety of hands-on activities to improve our reading and writing abilities. I love to make learning fun and interactive, especially in an online environment. Recently, I have renewed my license by taking graduate courses in digital learning and the Science of Reading. I love learning myself, and am always looking for ways to incorporate new ideas and research into my lessons!
