Join me for this journey following your meal from your mouth, through your digestive system and into the toilet bowl! Digestion may sound gross, but it is so important. It's where you get ALL the energy that keeps you alive! Do you ever wonder how your muscles move, how your brain thinks or how your body grows? Energy from your food, extracted through the digestive system, is the fuel for everything our bodies do. In this one-time class, learners will explore each organ in the digestive system and learn about each stage of the digestive process. We will draw a guided diagram of the digestive system and examine connections between other body systems including the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. Finally, we will review our understanding of digestion by watching Miss Jacquie demonstrate our guts in action in a messy-fun-speriment! Miss Jacquie is a biologist and certified teacher with a passion for education, science, nature and health. **A handout is provided with a color and label sheet for the digestive system (an alternative to the guided drawing or review), and a digestive system vocabulary list.
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to:
-explain the structure and function of each organ in the digestive system
-relate digestive system organs to their role in each stage of the digestive process
-describe the role of digestive secretions, enzymes and related systems (nervous, hormones and immune) in the digestive process
