Halloween is the perfect time to use chemistry! From spooky slime to dry ice fog, there are lots of things that you can do with science for Halloween! In this class, I will show you how to use chemistry to make a spooky, bubbling, oozing pumpkin! The first part of class will consist of lecture and instructor-led discussion about the science behind chemical reactions. I will then demonstrate how to make an bubbling, oozing pumpkin from a jack-o-lantern using things you probably already have...
I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with 6.5 years of experience in the classroom. I have also taught freshman college chemistry. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest and motivation- from high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
A handout with detailed instructions for making an oozing, bubbling pumpkin using chemical reactions is provided. Supplies needed for your own reaction include a carved pumpkin (you can also just do the reaction in a plastic bottle), baking soda, vinegar, water, and dish soap. The use of food coloring and glitter are optional.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Some students will need adult assistance with preparing the materials for the hands-on portion of the course and with cleanup.
