"Would you like to swing on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar?" Swinging On a Star How about building your own telescope? Making a constellation? Painting the moon? In this fun camp, we will learn about the universe with fun hands-on activities. Inspired by my 20-week classes this camp is bigger, messier, and even more hands-on than the classes I teach during the school year. Day One- How Not To Die in the Solar System On the first day of camp, we will spend some time getting to...
Students will learn about the sun, the moon, the planets, and some of the stars we can see from Earth. They will gain a better understanding of our galactic address. They will learn to identify constellations.
Ms. Brenda loves science and enjoys learning about science for fun. She studied Geology at Mesa Community College, received certificates in Anatomy and Physiology at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, completed an Astronomy and Cosmology course on Khan Academy, and is currently working her way through a Physics course on Khan Academy.
Homework Offered
The projects may take more time than the allotted time in class and require students to finish after class hours. The sundial will need to be attended to throughout the day.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Each student will complete a notebook with eight planets, the sun, and the moon. They will build a functioning telescope. They will have constellation models and matching flash cards. They will have a completed sundial and moon painting. Students will learn facts about the planets and constellations, be able to recognize constellations in the night sky, and have a greater appreciation for our place in the universe.Grades Offered
Ms. Brenda will provide a printable packet for class. It will need to be printed and ready prior to class. Day One- - Printed pages for guidebook - Colored Pencils - a sharpened pencil and eraser Day Two- - 2 convex lenses (can be from two magnifying glasses or purchased on Amazon for about $15 for 6) - 2 empty paper towel rolls - sharp scissors - masking tape - printed constellation cards -mini marshmallows -toothpicks Day Three- - 9-12 inch paper plate - unsharpened pencil - sharp pencil or similar to poke hole in plate - clay or dough - dark-colored marker - printed pages for guidebook - art paper (watercolor paper is best, but computer paper will work) - white school glue - black watercolor paint - paintbrush (a medium-sized brush will work better than the little ones that come in a watercolor set) - water - a cereal bowl or side plate to trace the circle
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Day One we will be discussing the facts of human mortality and discuss various ways humans can die in space and on other planets. Day Two we will be building telescopes from art supplies. Learners will be using scissors and glass. Parents must decide if their learners need assistance. We will also be using marshmallows to build models. Be aware of allergens in the marshmallows you buy. Things may get sticky. We will also be using toothpicks-- which are sharp. Day Three we will be building a sundial and students will need to punch a hole through a paper plate. We will also be painting with watercolor and it may get messy. Websites: We will be comparing our ages on various planets using the Exploratorium website. Learners will need to enter their date of birth for the activity, but no information is stored and no other information is collected. We will be looking up planet facts on the website of the National Air and Space Museum. Learners will not need to sign in to anything and will not need to enter any personal information.
