Class Experience

**NOTE Summer 2021** I will not be offering this camp over the summer. I will be focusing on family and developing new class ideas. Sorry for the inconvenience and enjoy your summer!

We will meet daily for a week to explore topics in science, do science together and have fun.

The class will be delivered as a combination of theory and practice. We will cover some brief background on each topic, try an experiment to demonstrate the theory, and discuss our findings. Video clips will be provided to extend the ideas where applicable. I will do the activities at the same time as the kids and walk them through the steps. Every effort will be made to keep supplies reasonable, but given that it's a hands on science camp, some stuff may be required to be purchased (see materials section below).

PLEASE NOTE: This class is not suitable for kids younger than 9. We will be playing with electricity and mixing things that require some precision.

Day 1: Can we make a reaction go faster by changing the temperature of the reactants and the size of the reactants?
Approximate materials:
- warm water
- cold water
- cups
- Alka-Seltzer (or pieces of bath bomb)
- mortar and pestle
- timer

Day 2: Does a falling object have more energy if it is dropped from a higher height?
Approximate materials:
- jello
- cups
- 2 marbles
- ruler

Day 3: Let's make circuits out of playdough and demonstrate how conductors and insulators work.
Approximate materials:
- playdough (store bought or homemade)
- 9V battery
- battery connector or wires with alligator clips
- 4 or 5 LED lights
- pipe cleaners
- bits of paper, cardboard, or craft foam

Day 4: Can we show that sound is created by vibrations?
Approximate materials:
- jumbo popsicle sticks
- straws
- elastic bands
- scissors

Day 5: Let's learn about polymers and make slime.
Approximate materials:
- glue
- powdered borax OR contact lens solution + baking soda (recipe for this will be provided)
- add ins like: glitter, beads, lotion, modeling clay, shaving foam

No prior experience is required.

NOTE: I will not be offering any Fall 2021 classes because I am heading back into the classroom in person. Stay tuned for any Winter 2022 offerings.

Hello!
I am passionate about teaching and learning. I believe that everyone, at any age can learn anything! Learning is exciting, and I am continuously filling my well of curiosity with new information about things that interest me.

I have taught kids from kindergarten to grade 12, as well as young adults in university. I have also homeschooled my three kids and they have taken classes on Outschool.

I hold degrees in Education, a Master’s in Physical Geography and a Bachelor's in Environmental Science. I teach classes in science, geography and math.

I love textile art and can often been found sewing, knitting, felting, or weaving. My next big project is figuring out how to make shoes! I am also fluent in French and love traveling to francophone areas.
