Let's explore our remarkable ocean! Our oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, and they contain an incredible 94 per cent of the Earth’s living species. There is so much to discover and explore! In this class we will cover a different topic in Oceanography each week . The class structure for the class will involve a presentation and then virtual tour of a new point in Oceanography. Throughout the presentation discussion will be encouraged and welcomed. Lastly we will start a hands on project or craft related to that topic. Week 1-Seafloor plate tectonics: We will study how oceans are formed by plate tectonics. Project: Build a seafloor spreading model. Week 2-Deep sea features (trenches): We will learn about ridges and trenches. Project: Make a map of the seafloor including trenches and ridges. Week 3-Zones of the ocean, marine provinces: We will discover the five ocean zones. Project: Make a model of the ocean zones and corresponding sea life. Week 4-: Deep sea creatures: We will study unique creatures found in the deepest parts of the ocean. Project: Make a paper deep sea creature. Week 5-Waves and tides: We will study waves, tides and currents. Projects: We will replicate the changes in currents based on different temperatures of ocean water. Week 6-Sustainability: We will discuss the importance of caring for and cleaning the ocean. Project: Design your own ocean cleaning device. Week 7-Bioluminesence: Certain animals and algae seem to glow from within. Project: We will make glow jars.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Arizona State University
During my time working in Montessori schools I was given the opportunity to design and implement a summer camp program that integrated scientific and cultural exploration with hands-on projects. It was a joy to teach and assist my students as they conquered these previously uncharted territories and I am only too happy to replicate that adventure here on Outschool. I have taken various college level physical science courses including Oceanography.
