Hands on Multiplication

We will go beyond simply memorizing math facts. While that is useful, I am going to be focusing on using hands on manipulatives and drawings to connect the abstract concepts to objects.

Class Experience

In this class we will focus on the multiplication strategy arrays. I will use direct instruction with a whiteboard and manipulatives and review vocabularly for about 15 minutes. Next, I will help students work through a few arrays with manipulatives of your choice (I have found food to be a great motivator) for about 15 minutes. Finally, for the last 15 minutes I will give students problems and they will use their manipulatives as well as a whiteboard or piece of paper to connect their arrays to repeated addition and multiplication sentences.

Prior Knowledge: Students will need to know how to skip count 2, 5, 10s, etc.

Learning Goals

Students will connect the idea of repeated addition, arrays, and multiplication together through the use of concrete, visual, and abstract tools.
