US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Students will delve deeply into number sense in a hands-on way using physical or printable Montessori manipulatives, creating a firm mathematical foundation for numbers 1-10. Students who understand math learn to love math, and I want my students to experience math in a hands-on way where they know they can try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. There are recorded lessons, followed by games for the learners to practice what is introduced with a math grown up helper. This practice is essential, so please plan on having a time set aside to work on the games together. These games can be played different ways with a helper to practice skills in a fun and interactive way! There are also a challenge worksheet with a Math Mission for students to work on and share! Students need to have the actual manipulatives with them (or a printable version) as we work through these lessons together. There is a second camera used in class to show the teacher's table so that the students are guided through problems step by step, working toward independence. This is a very low-tech class, with no screen sharing. We are actually doing the math together with our own hands! There are no live meetings. The schedule for this class is: Introduction to numbers to 10 -Video 1: Building a Montessori bead stair; Pick a number game -Video 2: Using a 10 frame with counters; Flip and build game Math Mission: Spill, Order, and Label Montessori colored beads work mat (with "Beat My Record" for kids who like to improve on speed) Comparing numbers to 10 -Video 3: Compare numbers using Montessori colored beads; Shake and compare game with beads, number cards, and "greater than," "less than", and "equal to" alligators -Video 4: Introduce tallies and use "greater than," "less than", and "equal to" alligators; Memory game and Number battle game Math Mission: Roll, build, and compare mat (with dice) Building equations that equal 10 -Video 5: Montessori snake game and making a golden snake; Fingers up and fingers down game to 10 game -Video 6: Add numbers to equal a sum of 10 on an 10 frame; Making 10 memory game Math Mission: Shake, Add, and Exchange to Make 10 game Adding numbers within 10 -Video 7: Add numbers on a 10 frame with counters; Pick and add game -Video 8: Add numbers with Montessori colored beads with plus and equal signs and a number bond; Flip it and add it with beads game Math Mission: Choosing a strategy to add worksheet (10 frame, beads, counters, memory) Subtracting numbers within 10 -Video 9: Understanding the concept of subtraction with counters; Left, right, middle game with cards -Video 10: Subtract numbers on a 10 frame; Start with 10 and roll to subtract game Math Mission: Choosing a strategy to subtract worksheet (10 frame, counters, memory) Solving for a missing addend and composing/decomposing numbers -Video 11: Using a ten frame to find a missing addend; Play Spin and Build -Video 12: Using a part to whole mat to work with Montessori beads; Play Shake and Make Math Mission: Play Flip and Build
