⭐️General⭐️ This is an ongoing homeroom math class covering the curriculum in 36 lessons from September to June. Stay for the year or jump in at any time. We will be learning through a combination of hands-on activities, pen-to-paper practice, Nearpod interactive presentations, short videos and creative projects. The teacher will provide optional weekly extension activities and extra practice resources including outdoor activities, art activities, online activities, worksheets and games. ⭐️Topics⭐️ 🧮️Arithmetic: Making Sense of Numbers ✔factors, multiples and prime factorization ✔negative and absolute values on the number line 🍕Fractions: Parts of a Whole ✔adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing ✔decimals ✔rates, ratios and percentages ❓Algebra: Solving Equations ✔PEDMAS ✔adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing 📐Geometry: Shapes and Measurement ✔perimeter, area, volume ✔angles, triangles, circles and polygons 📈Statistics: Making Sense of Data ✔measures of center and variability ✔populations and samples 🎲Probability: What are the Chances? ✔single and compound events 💰Financial Literacy ✔commissions, tips, taxes and discounts ⭐️Class Structure⭐️ ✔️Preview: 10 vocabulary words and a short video will be posted to the classroom three days before our meeting. The preview is optional and recommended. It will provide a good foundation of prerequisite knowledge prior to our class. ✔️Introductions: Each class will begin with introductions and check-ins so we can set expectations for our time together that day. ✔️Review: Following introductions and check-ins, learners will be challenged with a math quiz that reviews prior knowledge. This will include questions from the “Preview” materials. This quiz will help me with formative assessment, understanding the baseline knowledge of my students before I begin to teach. I am sensitive to test-taking stress and competition in the classroom and will do my best to make these quizzes a fun and positive part of the class experience. If you have any concerns about "testing" please let me know. ✔️New: A new math topic will be taught by demonstration, co-creation and individual practice (I do, we do, you do) using a variety of hands-on activities, pen-to-paper practice, and online technologies. I will often include guided-notes pages or other activities to promote engagement during direct instruction. ✔️Extension: Optional extension materials will be suggested to parents for ongoing practice at the parent's discretion. These can be a powerful part of your child’s learning and are highly recommended. ⭐️Teaching Methods⭐️ I endeavor to teach each skill three different ways, through three different media. Some examples are experimentation, observation, manipulatives, games, art, nature, videos, writing, listening, speaking and group work. I also aim to make each lesson relevant to the daily lives of my learners. I love to take school outside and incorporate it into STEM learning. ⭐️Interaction⭐️ Learners will interact with each other and the teacher through discussion, games and sharing of creative projects. ⭐️Prior Knowledge⭐️ Learning math requires scaffolding, or building on previously learned skills. While this is an ongoing class, learners will be expected to have a strong understanding of 5th Grade math concepts and other prerequisite knowledge listed for each meeting. Learners will be encouraged to watch a related instructional video, complete a practice quiz and review vocabulary posted to the classroom each week prior to the class. ⭐️Topics by Week 2023⭐️ 🧮️Arithmetic: Making Sense of Numbers 1: September 5-9: Factors, Multiples and Prime Factorization 2: September 12-16: Greatest Common Factor 3: September 19-23: Lowest Common Multiple 4: September 26-30: Distributive Property and Factors 5: October 3-7: Negative and Absolute Values on the Number Line 🍕Fractions: Parts of a Whole 6: October 10-14: Adding and Subtracting 7: October 17-21: Multiplying and Dividing 8: October 24-28: Decimals 9: October 31-November 4: Rates and Ratios 10: November 7-11: Proportions 11: November 14-18: Conversions: Fractions, Decimals, Ratios and Percentages 12: November 21-25: Percentage of a Number and Percentage of Change 13: November 28- December 2: Fractions with Negative and Mixed Numbers ❓Algebra: Solving Equations 14: December 5-9: Adding and Subtracting 15: December 12-16: Multiplying and Dividing ❄️December 19-31: *Winter Break NO CLASS* 16: January 2-6: Two-Step Equations 17: January 9-13: Multi-Step Equations: Distributive Property 18: January 16-20: Multi-Step Equations: Like-Terms 19: January 23-27: Multi-Step Equations: Variables on Both Sides 20: January 30-February 3: Inequalities 📐Geometry: Shapes and Measurement 21: February 6-10: Polygons: Perimeter and Area 22: February 13-17: Triangles: Perimeter and Area 23: February 20-24: Prisms: Surface Area and Volume 24: February 27-March 3: Similar Figures 25: March 6-10: Angles 26: March 13-17: Triangle Inequality Theorem 🌸March 20-24 *Spring Break* 27: March 27-31: Pythagorean Theorem 28: April 3-7: Circles - Circumference and Area 📈Statistics: Making Sense of Data 29: April 10-14: Measures of Center 30: April 17-21: Variability: Box and Whisker Plots 31: April 24-28: Graphs 32: May 1-5: Populations and Samples 🎲Probability: What are the Chances? 33: May 8-12: Simple Events 34: May 15-19: Theoretical and Experimental Probability 35: May 22-26: Compound Events ⭐️Sample Materials⭐️ I have included the materials for Week 1 at the link below for parents to reference when deciding about enrollment.
