Class

What's included

4 live meetings
3 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. There is very minimal homework that is assigned. Each week students will be asked to research a reptile or amphibian from the group we discussed in the previous week and share what reptile they chose and why with the class. This will reinforce the learner's curiosity on the topic and also encourage them to explore the topic on their own terms outside of class. Homework is not graded, it is just an opportunity for learners to share their interests!
Assessment
Learner progress is assessed by engagement in class with discussion, questions asked, and participation in weekly homework.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
During this course, learners will learn about the study of reptiles and amphibians! We will cover each animal group in the study of herpetology; snakes, crocodilians, lizards, turtles, and amphibians. The class includes a slideshow that includes video and picture examples of herps. There are also live animal ambassadors during each class (disclaimer: I will not have a crocodilian or turtle example but there will be live lizards for that class regardless). Animal ambassadors help students remain engaged and curious about the topic we are learning about. As a fellow reptile lover, I understand the curiosity that comes with wanting to learn about reptiles. With that in mind, this class is fun and upbeat, and includes lots of time for students to discuss their interest in reptiles and ask questions!
Learning Goals
This course is four weeks long and each week we learn about different herpetology groups.
Class 1/Week of 4/16/2023: Lizards
Class 2/Week of 4/23/2023: Turtles and Tortoises and Snakes
Class 3/Week of 4/30/2023 Crocodiles
Class 4/Week of 5/7/2023: Amphibians
For each of these groups, we will discuss the taxonomy, biology, anatomy, conservation, and distribution of the animal group overall. Additionally, we use specific animal species and live animals as examples to discuss these topics in-depth.
