Students will learn: -An introduction where chocolate comes from -Self-confidence and independence in the kitchen while cooking & baking -Practice following directions -Use math and fractions to measure wet and dry ingredients -Importance of ingredient order in cooking & baking -How ingredient ratios affect cookie texture -Practice motor skills like breaking an egg, whisking, and mixing -Forming cookie dough shapes and decorating -Practice creativity as they shape their cookie dough into shapes of the their choice! These are creative cookie classes I designed for my own children. I enjoy combining education with hand-on activities. Fun learning is the best kind of learning! My favorite pastime is cooking & baking, and I love to teach cooking to young learners! Whenever I teach students cooking & baking, I enjoy seeing their sense of accomplishment when they create dishes with their own hands. I homeschool my children, ages eight and five, utilizing a hybrid combination of formal learning and unschooling. I have spent countless hours cooking & baking with my two children while homeschooling them. My kids' interests are what give me my class ideas! I have experience teaching my son, who requires unique adaptations to how new information is presented and taught. I am happy to help a neurodiverse and differently-abled learner get the most out of my class, too. We’re ND-friendly! I have been a teacher for more than 15 years, teaching life skills and personal development strategies to youths. I have also taught cooking & baking classes to teens in a volunteer outreach program. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Business and a minor in Education. I also possess a TEFL teaching certification for specialized Cooperative Learning Approaches and Introduction of New Skills to Young Learners.

1 file available upon enrollmentFeel free to substitute as needed when the exact ingredients or materials are unavailable, undesired or if any allergies exist. Note: Students should have all the ingredients, softened butter, cooking utensils, and recipe ready before the cooking & baking class begins so that students are not searching for them during cooking instruction. Recipe instructions will be posted in the classroom at least 24 hours before class start. I will also copy the recipe in the chat during the class. INGREDIENTS 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 +1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 stick butter, softened 3/4 cup white sugar 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract And lots of M&Ms and sprinkles!!!! (Based on previous experience) Decoration: Mini M&M's Milk Chocolate Candy, Regular M&Ms, chocolate chips, sprinkles, natural food coloring, decorative toppings or substitute toppings of your choice. We are going to use these to turn our cookies into edible art. UTENSILS 2 or 3 cookie sheets, lightly greased or lined 2 mixing bowls Measuring cups and spoons Mixing spoon and fork Coffee cup and saucer (used for breaking the egg) Two spoons or cookie dough scoop Cooling rack or plates to cool cookies.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Beginner bakers will need a parent to be present for this cooking & baking class. The students will be baking in an oven, so parental supervision is strongly suggested. Some learners may need some additional help breaking their egg. Parents should remain off-camera while providing support and supervision. If a child falls too far behind the rest of the class during the recipe, a parent or guardian should be ready to assist the learner in completing the recipe. Before class, an adult may need to gather all the ingredients and preheat the oven. Measuring will be done during class, but some learners may need parental assistance with measuring. Since parents know their child best, some parents may prefer to put measured ingredients in separate small bowls so the learner can just add the ingredients as we go through the recipe. Please assess your child’s abilities to bake safely. During this class, an adult may need to bake the sprinkle cookies in an oven.
