Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Alexander Hamilton has become a very popular historical figure since the opening of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical, "Hamilton." But who was Alexander Hamilton really and how accurate is the musical? In this class we will learn the real stories of the people and events that inspired the musical about the founding of America. We will examine what the musical got right, what it got wrong, and what it left out completely.

Although this class is structured around the musical, it is not necessary to have seen or listened to "Hamilton" to participate in this class. We will be discussing the Revolutionary War, America's Founding Fathers, and early American history with a little musical theater flair!

We will examine the following topics each week,

Week 1- Hamilton vs Burr
Week 2- The Schuyler Sisters (Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy- plus the forgotten siblings that didn't make it into the musical)
Week 3- Hamilton's Boys (Laurens, Mulligan, Lafayette)
Week 4- The Virginians (Washington, Jefferson, Madison)
Week 5- Scandal! (Charles Lee duel, Reynolds Affair, John Adams feud)
Week 6- The Room Where It Happened (political negotiations during America's founding years)

I am a licensed teacher and librarian that has experience helping students research and complete projects about different events and people from history. I fell in love with the Hamilton soundtrack the first time I listened to it and have been working the musical into my lessons ever since. I have seen Hamilton in New York on Broadway (with some of the original cast) and in London's West End (plus too many times to count streaming from my home).
