Class Experience

This course will give a summary of the genre of American-made musicsls made about American life. The course will also give a synopsis of how Hamilton changes the pattern of how American musicsls fit mythos about the "American Dream" and its surrounding limitations. This class will be lecture style but also include clips from musicals and songs. This class will also detail race relations, sexuality, and other topics that have changed socially over time and subsequently changed musicsls as a genre. Especially important is the idea that American musicals usually put forth the ideas of life being simple and provincial without much struggle for the protagonists while also eliminating the need to discuss racial tension in the eras they present. Hamilton, subsequently had turned those assumptions on its head and redefined the genre, not only in its casting of people of color, but also in its refusal to lean away from issues. Musicals studied will be Oklahoma, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and Hamilton.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of American-made "slice of life" musicals and how as a genre they have manifested social cues.

Parental Guidance
Profanity, sex, and violence may be brought up as a result of this class. These topics will be probed gently and not discussed in more detail than their inclusion ("as we can see from Maria Reynolds inclusion as Hamilton's mistress, we can see that sex is less of a taboo in the modern American musical.") though if students bring up instances of sensitive topics that they want to further address, they will be done so sensitively. As well, students will be told that there will be sensitive content and that they may leave at any time. I do not think this class will be graphic on any sensitive subject, but I thought it best to give a warning just in case.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have training in performing arts classes observing sensitive topics as a performer and have taken classes dealing explicitly with race relations in the media. I also have training in crucial conversations and how to have conversations where the outcome is not always positive, there is something at stake, and tensions are high.
