Class Experience

Get ready to flex your creative muscles as you draw, blend, and create vibrant Halloween scenes using oil pastels and a graphite pencil. You will learn new techniques and get inspired by fellow classmates through discussion and sharing at the end of each class.
I will lead you in creating a masterpiece in easy to follow steps. However, there will be plenty of room for artistic choice when it comes to color selection and scene details, so each artist will create something unique. This is a perfect class for those who are new to oil pastels or those who are ready to dive in a little deeper.

Learning Goals

Students will gain knowledge of new artistic techniques and terms. Specifically, we will be focusing on oil pastel blending techniques, creating mood, color theory, and drawing silhouettes.

Supply List
Please make sure each learner has:
- Set of oil pastels (a pack of 12 or greater is ideal)
-White medium weight paper that is fairly smooth (cardstock or 90 lb watercolor paper, something thicker than printer paper)
-Roll of masking tape (painter's tape will also work)
-Graphite pencil (an ebony pencil is my favorite, but any 6B-10B will work, a #2 can work, but not as well)
-Wet wipes or paper towel (will be used to wipe off pastels & fingers, so make sure it is ok to get dirty)

Optional:
-Scissors (only needed if student has difficulty tearing masking tape)
-Blending stubs (2-4)
-Write acrylic paint pen
-Plastic placemat (we are going to tape our paper down, I find it easier to tape it to a placemat instead of directly on the table)

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I love to share my obsession with oil pastels and creativity with students of all ages. I hold degree in Theatre Arts & Education. However, visual art has always been a part of my life. In 2020 I took a few oil pastel classes and have not stopped creating with them since. I have won 4 blue ribbons in the Winona County Fair for my artwork, exhibited in a few local art shows, and one of my creations was recently selected to hang in the Museum of Broadway in New York City upon it's opening in fall of 2022.

I have been an arts educator for over 20 years and I love teaching new art terms and techniques while still encouraging creativity and artistic choice. In my classes students should expect to follow step by step instructions in order to create a small masterpiece that fits in with the days theme, however there will be plenty of room for each artist to make choices along the way so that their work will be unique. My favorite part of class is at the end when everyone holds up their work to share what they created.

In addition to loving oil pastels, I am a musical theatre geek, a mom (of a teen, 1 cat, 2 guinea pigs, & 1 Beta fish), a wife, and a birder who loves to travel.
