30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class learners will engage in a popular Halloween Read Aloud:" The Legend of Spookley, The Square Pumpkin" by Joe Troiano. Children will begin class by discussing the different activities they enjoy doing this time of year. The discussion will be led by the teacher. Learners will then be asked to identify a few different shapes the teacher is drawing:"circle, square, triangle, rectangle, diamond." They will be asked to pick one shape and draw it on their blank piece of paper. This will lead into the song/chant and the read aloud of the story. Learners will be engaged throughout the story by answering/discussing teacher led questions about the story. These questions will include demonstrating comprehension skills:"Sequence of Events, Story Structure, Making Predictions, Making Inferences and Relating Text to Self." Questions will lead a discussion of the vocabulary words:"special/unique." Children will then be asked to look at the shape they drew before the story was read. How is this shape unique to a pumpkin shape? Children will be given time to complete the pumpkin drawing with the teacher. The final class discussion will be to share and discuss with each other what makes each of them "special/unique" and allow them to understand this should be celebrated with each other!!
