Halloween - Pumpkins Are Not Just for Carving! Animals Love Them Too!
Pumpkins are fall favorites for decoration, crafts & recipes! This class will share historical use of pumpkins, steps for growth & current common uses, including livestock feed & animal enrichment. Each week will have a pumpkin activity!

In this class we will review the origins, historical uses of pumpkins, the steps and requirements for pumpkin growth, types of pumpkins and common uses of pumpkins today, including adding them to the feed of livestock and animal enrichment toys! This class will have PowerPoint slides, class discussions and an activity each week. Class one: The origin of pumpkins and how pumpkins have been used in the past. The steps and requirements for growing pumpkins will be reviewed as well as a variety of types of pumpkins. After the lesson we will play a pumpkin bingo game! ( bingo card sheet will be provided in the classroom to be printed out prior to class) Class two: Pumpkins are not just for carving!! In this class we will discuss a variety of ways that pumpkins are used today! Learners will be asked to share ways that they see pumpkins used. The use of pumpkins as a livestock feed additive and for enrichment toys for animals will wrap up our discussion. The rest of class will be time for learners to paint a pumpkin (no carving for this class), or to create some other pumpkin related art work!

Parental Guidance
No pumpkin carving will be allowed in class. Crafts can include painting a pumpkin, drawing or painting a pumpkin or pumpkin scene on paper or what ever other craft material that they would like!
A few pumpkins in agriculture related YouTube videos will be provided, as well as possibly a clip shown in class.
Supply List
Pumpkin bingo sheet will be provided in the classroom prior to the first class. This will be needed for day one, so please print out (or copy on to a sheet of paper if you can't print). Class two will be a pumpkin art project of the learner's choice. They can paint on a pumpkin, paint or draw a pumpkin or pumpkin themed picture, or create another pumpkin craft! NOTE : no pumpkin carving in this class

I am a certified veterinary technician and previously was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. I have a MEd from Colorado State University and am working on my second master’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University School of Veterinary Medicine’s Master of Veterinary Education.
I love sharing with learners about animals and the environment and how we can care for and enjoy both!
