Class Experience

In this class, we will do four fun Halloween-themed science experiments! This class is the perfect way to get excited about Halloween and learn some science in a fun and festive way.

In class 1, we will learn about polymers before making our own pumpkin pie slime and whipped cream slime .
In class 2, we will learn about mixtures, solutions, and chromatography before doing chromatography on some Halloween candy (or washable markers!)
In class 3, we will learn about chemical reaction rates and use our knowledge to make the brightest glowing ghost!
In class 4, we will learn about chemical reactions before using our knowledge to bring ghosts to life and to make a fizzing foaming pumpkin.

How class is structured:
Each week in the classroom several posts will be made.
Post 1: all of that week's videos and PDF files will be uploaded. The first video will explain that week's science concept, while the second video will demonstrate how to complete that week's activity or experiment.
Post 2: students will be asked to share their predictions and observations from that week's activity and upload a photo or video of their final results from that week. They will also be asked to comment on the videos or photos of other learners.
Post 3: discussion question. Students will read and reply to the discussion question, which will tie together the science that was talked about that week and the actual experiment that they did. They will be expected to provide either a written or video reply to contribute to that week's discussion.

Teacher interaction:
In addition to uploading the content each week and providing timely responses to questions about the activity procedures, I will provide comments on student predictions and observations and ask follow-up questions as necessary. I will also moderate the discussion question by answering questions, providing feedback, and steering the conversation in a way that encourages collaborative learning and community building.

NOTE: All activities will be uploaded BEFORE Halloween, even if the class is scheduled to continue past 10/31.

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with 6.5 years of experience in the classroom and over a year of experience teaching on Outschool. I have also taught freshman college chemistry. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest and motivation- from high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
