Class Experience

***THIS IS A FLEX CLASS*** Unlike Mr. Niven’s other classes, this class will run for 4 weeks, and WILL NOT MEET LIVE. Instead Mr. Niven will post high-quality tutorials of the lessons, which include recordings of him speaking into the camera, as well as step-by-step instruction of Mr. Niven’s screen-recording as he draws on his iPad. Lessons will be posted to the Outschool Classroom each week, along with video feedback from Mr. Niven regarding the previous weeks artwork.

This class DOES NOT require any prerequisites since the principles/techniques needed to complete the class are taught DURING the lesson*** However, if possible, since this class is NOT LIVE, it many help to first, take a live class with Mr. Niven.

No matter your time zone, your personality, learning preference, or internet speed, there is a solution for you!

Week 1: If you were jealous that “Glowee the Ghost” was only available to the younger kids, now you can draw a super fun, detailed version for yourself! Be sure to show off your artwork by posting the final image on the Outschool classroom after each lesson!

Week 2: Use highlighting and layer selection to enhance and create natural contour, as we craft Corbin the candy corn, with his super-fuzzy orange sweater! If you want, share what your favorite candy is!

Week 3: Replicating organic mediums with digital art is a skill that will set you apart from the rest. Learn how to use gouache to create a haunted house with an unbelievably realistic painterly technique.

Week 4: Further expand your capabilities with a boldly energetic scene of a breakdancing skeleton, using super high contrast and vivid color.

Supply List
Students MUST have Procreate downloaded prior to class. This class can be done on either iPad or iPhone, and Mr. Niven recommends using a stylus that supports pressure sensitivity. For best results with brushes, (like the gouache brush for the third week), and added control, Mr. Niven HIGHLY recommends Apple Pencil as it is BY FAR the best stylus for iPad. Two other brands of stylus Mr. Niven recommends are Wacom Bamboo Fineline or Sketch, both of which support pressure sensitivity on iPad and iPhone. For more information on software and hardware, including information about Procreate, as well as compatibility, and recommendations for various iPads, or iPhones and styli that support Procreate, please consider enrolling in Mr. Niven’s Digital Art Orientation, for Students and Parents.
