Class Experience

Watery Wizardry
1. Students will review the unique properties of water including density, polarity, and solubility.
2. Students will prepare a chemical reaction highlighting the concept of density and solubility.
3. Students will explore the hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature of soap in a colorful, swirling experiment.
As a chemistry teacher for the last 23 years, I have always found that students learn better through application. Providing an enriching environment helps hook the student while teaching underlying chemistry concepts.
Watery Wizardry
Teacher will provide a digital copy of the watery wizardry activities. To complete the hands-on component during the live session, students will need water, food dye (various colors), vegetable oil, one effervescent antacid pain-relief tablet (alka-seltzer), whole milk, liquid dish soap, clear cup (or test tube), plate, and cotton swabs.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed via chats and reflection assignments.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Minimal parental assistance needed during class.
