In this spooky one-time course, learners will listen to multiple halloween stories all about monsters while coloring and creating a monster of their own!

Are you ready for a little halloween spook? In this one-time class learners will listen to three classic halloween stories all about monsters! The stories learners will listen to are, I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll, Go Away Big Green Monster! By Ed Emberley, and Even Monsters Need a Haircut by Matthew McElligott. While listening to the stories, students will have a printable outline of a monster to color. Following the stories, we will be using the colored monster outline as a playdough mat where learners will create their very own spooky, scary monster out of playdough! Learners will be having so much fun, they won't even know they are exercising their comprehension skills, developing their oral language skills, strengthening their fine motor muscles and practicing their phonemic awareness skills. This will be a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Students will only be muted during the reading of the stories and will have multiple opportunities to respond and show off their monsters. Please make sure you read the supply list and have supplies ready for class.

Parental Guidance
If your student does not know how to use the mute and unmute function, parental assistance will be needed, as some learners have settings on Zoom that do not allow the teacher to unmute. Students may also need help putting their colored monster into the page protector to use with playdough.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Courtney Thornton and have a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with two endorsements - one in Reading and one in English as a Second Language (ESL). My teaching license is current in the state of Utah and I have 8 years of classroom experience teaching kindergarten, 2nd grade and 3rd grade. I currently tutor students in Reading while being a stay at home mom to my three-year-old daughter.
I believe my role as an educator is to create an environment where students feel safe sharing ideas and taking risks while helping them develop and recognize their highest learning potential. I love teaching in a way where learning is fun and engaging by incorporating the four learning styles (visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic) into my lessons.
My teaching passion is in early reading skills so you will see most of my classes directed toward helping students develop a strong reading foundation to build upon. I also love teaching classes centered around early math skills, and STEM (Science, technology, engineering, math) projects.
Outside of teaching, my hobbies are spending time with my family exploring the outdoors, DIY projects around the house, traveling, gardening and baking.
