Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Are you looking for a way to engage your child with writing and grammar while having fun? Poetry is a great way to blend those skills together in an upbeat and new twist on writing.

In this one time class, your child will learn all about the format of a haiku poem as well as its origin. Drawing on my expertise as a classroom teacher and librarian, I will share a variety of poem books that provide examples of haikus. I'll also provide a resource handout after class that offers suggested poetry books should you want your child to continue exploring poems.

Your child will have fun in this class as my energetic teaching styles creates a positive and engaging learning environment. If you have a child who does not like writing, I always work to encourage and support writers where they are to make it a more enjoyable experience. One aspect of this class is the interaction your child will have has he/she collaborates with others to write haikus together before then having time to write his/her own haiku. We'll even use a great online interactive to help write haikus and it's perfect for those who enjoy typing more than pencil writing.

At the end of the class, we'll review the key elements of a haiku poem and each child will have time to share his/her unique haiku.

This class serves as a great way to either introduce your child to poetry or build upon your child's existing understanding of poetry. If your child wants to continue or learn more about poetry, check out my class, Writing Poetry: Poems are Fun which is set up as an ongoing course. Haikus are covered in that class as well but you are welcomed to join in for the weeks addressing other poetry forms!

Don't see a time that works for you? Just let me know and I am happy to work with you to try to schedule a section. Got a small group such as a charter school, homeschool group, or learning co-op? Send me a message and I'll work to schedule a private section at no additional cost.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching poetry and its always one of my favorite topics to share with learners. As a veteran teacher and school librarian, I have found many students are typically not fans of poetry. With that said, I love to help to foster and cultivate an appreciation for poetry by making it a fun and engaging lesson they won't forget! This lesson is one my students always loved each year and my hope is that your child is captivated by this short yet meaningful type of poem. You'll find in all my classes, I love to employ various teaching techniques such as songs, visuals, and stories to reach the needs of all learners. I'm always looking at ways to think outside the box and really draw children into the magic and wonder of reading and writing!
