Each week, students will be given opportunities to socialize in a safe, naturalistic environment. It can be hard making friends and hard to socialize. Having time to chat about things and play games can help students to feel more secure and less stressed. This class is very flexible in natural and will be partially guided by student interest. We will talk about topics that students are interested in talking about. Students are expected to be focused on class, so playing video games or doing other things on device(s) without teacher permission is not allowed. If this becomes an issue, parents are contacted. Controversial subjects will not be discussed. All students will be encouraged to participate either verbally or through chat. The students will learn by interacting during our class meetings in large and small groups. Small groups will be done by the students being placed into Zoom breakout rooms. Sometimes, it will be to get to know each other. Other times, it may be to take about shared interests or to play games. This allows students more time to interact, naturally practicing social skills such as starting and keeping a conversation going. Class time will be structured around the group's interests, which is done by the teacher often giving students choices. We will talk, play games, and more. As for topics that will be covered, student interest will guide what we discuss in order for each student to get the most out of the experience. Because this class relies on social interaction, it is expected that student's cameras are on throughout class. I do understand that sometimes there are reasons for them to be off such as internet issues, location the class is being taken, and more. Please communicate this to me or have your student do so. As long as there is a reason that I am aware of, I understand. If you have questions regarding this or would like to know why I have this expectation, reach out! When it comes to my role as the teacher, I am a facilitator, there for guidance. If I notice an issue or trend, I address it privately if it mainly applies to one student or with the entire class when appropriate (of course as a learning opportunity, not to point out a specific group or student). Formal lessons are not given in this class. Informal, natural learning occurs instead. I mention tips to students as needed, give ideas, and more. I am always available for help, even when students are in breakout rooms. There is an "ask for help" button that gets my attention on my screen immediately. Each section likely will be different because different students will be in the courses and have different goals and interests. If your student would like to be in more than one section, that is perfectly acceptable, and I have a few students who have done so! Students are welcome to join any section at any time as long as there is space!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Illinois Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello!
I am an certified educator with a diverse background working with students of all ages and ability levels in various settings. These settings include day cares, public schools, college, specialized schools, and in homes. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects such as the following: social courses, English, art, science, and life skills. I believe that every student is capable of learning in their own way. I am happy to adapt my courses for the needs of my students. I knew I wanted to be a teacher as a first grade student. Teaching and working with children is something that I have always been passionate about and incorporate into my life. When I was in school, English and art were always my favorite subjects. I enjoyed writing and helping my peers with their writing. Language is a part of our everyday lives, so it is a vital skill to work on throughout our lives.
Currently, I am a special education preschool teacher, and prior to that, a fourth grade teacher at a public school in the US. I am a first generation college student with both an associate's degree and a bachelor's degree. I am certified in both Florida and Illinois to teach students birth through age 22 for special education and birth through grade 6 general education. Additionally, I’m certified to be a reading teacher in Illinois.
I love doing art! I enjoy projects of all kinds and trying out new methods of painting. I paint when I am stressed, happy, or really just because! I also adore animals. I have a cat named Dexter (Dex for short). Dexter is quite smart, social, and playful. He loves to play fetch. I also have a class pet, Nugget, who is a leopard gecko. He loves to see what we are up to! My favorite volunteer position has been a NICU Cuddler! I held infants in a hospital that were born premature or with a medical condition that requires them to be there for awhile.
