The opening chapter begins with students having been the victims of an airplane accident where different British students are left to survive on their own as they await rescue. As you can imagine, not all goes well. There are several detailed sections that violent. Not all of the students survive to be rescued. One of the main elements is an unknown beast that scares several of the younger boys. I will not introduce this topic during the book study. Violence is a key theme in the book including the killing of one of the boys and of a wild pig. The pig's head is put upon a spike and becomes the "Lord of the Flies." As a parent, you know your learner best, and can decide if this book is an appropriate read.
