This course will be a full introductory course in playing the acoustic guitar (though all of the concepts taught will be applicable to the electric guitar as well). Students will learn: 1) how to properly hold the guitar 2) the parts of the guitar 3) string names and tuning 4) importance of building finger calluses 5) changing chords 6) strumming techniques and strumming in time 7) 8 most common open chords: G, Em, C, D, Am, Dm, E, A The course will be structured as a small group learning community each week with my modeling concepts and having students mirror those concepts. Concepts will be taught in an incremental manner so as to offer a short review of the previous week's material at the beginning of each session. Stronger students will be encouraged to work with students who need a bit more assistance, while I will be interacting throughout each session with each student. Because this is an introductory course, absolutely no knowledge of the guitar is required! Week I: student/teacher introductions, parts of the guitar, correctly holding the guitar and pick, tuning/ string names Week II: down-down strumming techniques and introduction of the G and Em chords and chord switching between the two (with use of a chord diagram) Week III: down-down- up strumming techniques and introduction of the C chord (practice with switching from G, Em and C chords) Week IV: down-down-up-up-down strumming in time with the metronome, introduction of the D chord Week V: down-down-up-up-down strumming in time with the metronome; introduction of the A and E chords (and switching between them) Week VI: down-down-up-up-down strumming in time with the metronome; introduction of the Am and Dm chords (and switching between them) Week VII: review of the 8 open chords (chord fingerings and switching) and strumming patterns learned Week VIII: whole class song performance!

I have been playing guitar since 1992, and I have loved every minute of it! My experience involves taking four years of guitar lessons, along with the study of music theory in college. Additionally, I have played in various bands (electric lead guitar and acoustic rhythm guitar) since that time. I have been a member of my current band since 2016 and I play both types of guitar there as well. Finally, I have experience teaching guitar lessons, and I feel my degrees in education allow me to adapt to all types of learners and situations. I can't wait to meet you in class and play guitar together!
