Class Experience

Beginner Level
In this course we will learn about how guitar playing is used in the songwriting process. Basic chords, alternate chords, common chord patterns and playing techniques will be discussed in a fun and easy to grasp manner. My teaching style is easy going but pragmatic. I want each young writer to come away from every class with something that they can use to improve their skills right away. We will reserve some time at the end of each class for questions and discussion.

Learning Goals

Ultimately, students will learn that songwriting is a skill that can be learned and improved upon. Everyone starts at the beginning and there is always more to discover. Every new skill you learn opens up new possibilities in creativity.

over 6 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Building Blocks
We will start by getting acquainted with the basic chords found in every song from the Beatles to Beyonce. When we understand the difference between major and minor chords we begin to see how they effect the tone, the approach, and the emotional direction of your song. We will also learn how switching between these chords can add depth and excitement to your composition.

Lesson 2:
That Something Extra
Now that you've had a week to bang around on those chords it's time to shake it up a bit. There are a million ways to play the same chord. And while we won't cover them all we will learn some basic substitutions that not only add harmonic interest but allow the writer room to sing and find the melodies that make your song come alive.

Lesson 3:
A Common Language
An endless list of Pop songs are written around a small group of chord changes. We will look at these changes and see how successful writers like Taylor Swift, H.E.R, Gracie Abrams or Hozier make these changes their own by using voicings, drones and capos. This will be fun.

Lesson 4:
Fingerpicking vs. Strumming
This time around the students will suggest a sequence of chords and we will explore how your right hand technique can drastically change the outcome of your song. It's natural for a guitarist to gravitate toward a certain style and that's cool. But if chords are the colors we paint with then our right hand techniques are the brushes that layer those colors. (ps. If you are a left handed player the same is true.)

Learning Needs
I have worked with kids with ADHD and Autism. If your guitarist needs a format more suited to them, contact me and we'll put our heads together.
Pre-Requisites
You'll need a guitar a note book and a pen. A basic knowledge of the instrument would help. Also, a capo is a worthwhile investment. There are many styles and you can get a good one for less than $20.
