Class Experience

Come join me for a fun-filled Guinea Pig Summer Camp and learn more about your guinea pig. This camp is to help students who just adopted a guinea pig learn more about guinea pig care. This camp is very interactive and the teacher will provide demonstrations with the guinea pigs for the learners. Students are encouraged to bring their guinea pig(s) to class, with parental supervision. There is no prior knowledge in guinea pig care needed for this course. In this multi-day course, learners will learn through a Powerpoint presentation, lecture, and demonstrations with my guinea pigs:“Chloe”, “Rosie”, "Boomer", "Mocha", "Oreo", "Winter", or "Stitch"

Camp Day 1:
On camp day one, students will participate in introducing their guinea pig such as age and name, why you chose a guinea pig as a pet, where you got your guinea pig, what your guinea pig likes most, and anything else you would like to share about your guinea pig. Students will learn where guinea pigs come from and their habitat. You will learn the different guinea pig breeds. How to properly handle your guinea pig. The importance of guinea pig nutrition and the types of foods they should eat such as vegetables and fruits they need. You will learn about guinea pig safety and guinea pig do’s and don’ts.

Camp Day 2:
On camp day two, students will learn about how to properly maintain the guinea pigs' cage, and how to clean the cage, the possibility for cage liners. Students will learn about how often to bathe their guinea pig, cut their nails, learn about common guinea pig illnesses such as digestive disorders, eye, and ear disorders, nutritional disorders, metabolic disorders, skin disorders, issues with teeth, and more. Students will learn the symptoms to watch for and the common treatments for these disorders.

Camp Day 3:
On camp day three, students will learn enrichment opportunities they can provide for the guinea pig. As guinea pigs can get bored easily, it is important to keep them busy. You will learn ways to interact with them, make toys for your guinea pig to exercise, toys for your guinea pig to stay busy in their cage, outside activities for your guinea pig, and much more. *On this day, we will be making toys for our guinea pig out of old toilet paper rolls.*

**As animals can be unpredictable, it is recommended parents be nearby to assist with the handling of the guinea pig in class in the event the guinea pig gets frightened.**

**As scissors are needed during day 3, parental supervision is recommended for students who cannot use scissors safely**

**Please note: I am not a licensed veterinarian. I cannot advise on specific health concerns, I can only inform on what to look for and how to prevent illnesses. If your guinea pig is sick, please take her/him to the veterinarian.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to better care for their guinea pigs to include how to identify breeds, how to groom their guinea pig, cage size, food, how to spot illnesses, provide enrichment for their guinea pigs, and keeping guinea pigs safe.
