Class Experience

Each 50-minute class will include a lecture with slides, interactive writing exercises, and the start of independent writing exercises to be completed as homework. Lessons will overlap to ensure student understanding. This is an ESL basic skills class in which students will receive guidance on each step covered in this class. Students will complete guided writing assignments and will receive feedback from the instructor. Students will be asked questions to assess understanding and encouraged to ask questions both in class and through classroom posts outside of sessions.

Week 1: Grammar and Writing Check-Ups
Students will participate in a lesson on parallelism, the repeated use of the same grammar form within a sentence to make sentences easy to read. Students will submit in-class writing exercises to be reviewed by the instructor and returned after class so that I can grasp students' needs.

Week 2: Grammar Follow-Up, Outlines, and Sentence Structure
Students will participate in interactive exercises based on the previous week's check-ups. Students will be introduced to outlines as a way to organize ideas. Topic outlines will be briefly covered. Sentence outlines will be used to review and practice proper sentence structure.

Week 3: Paragraph Development and Essay Writing
Students will focus on creating clear and effective paragraphs by learning about topic sentences and support sentences. Students will draft a five-paragraph essay and an optional post-draft outline. References of outside sources will be required. Reference formatting instructions will be provided, but there will not be a lot of time spent in class on this topic.

Week 4: Paragraphs and Essay Writing
Students will use feedback from the previous assignments to deepen their practice of creating well-structured topic sentences and sentences of support. Students will write a second five-paragraph essay and/or revise last week's essay and an optional post-draft essay outside of class.

Week 5: Essay Wrap Up, Tools for Continued Practice
Students will complete interactive exercises based on the most-needed reviews from the previous weeks based on the teacher's assessment of the previous weeks of class discussion and homework. Students will write a third five-paragraph essay and/or revise last week's essay. Students will receive feedback on essays completed within a specified time period.

Week 6: In-class Writing Practice

Students are encouraged to post questions and writing excerpts in class.

Learning Goals

Students will practice using correct sentence structure, forming clear paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting evidence, and creating essays and post-draft outlines for review and revisions.

Greetings!

In my writing courses, students will develop skills in producing clear, effective, and engaging narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive essays. Courses will cover traits of effective writing, including sentence fluency, conventions, and organization by exploring building blocks such as word choice, sentence structure, parallel structure, and thesis statements. Students will receive feedback on assignments.

In my interactive history re-enactment classes, students will be transported to historical social justice organizational meetings and "interact" with Civil Rights icons such as Fannie Lou Hamer, Ida B. Wells, and Ella Baker. Students will review historical events that led to organizing by reviewing digitized artifacts, news articles, organizational publications, logos, meeting agendas, speeches, and excerpts from recordings.

Hands-on learning classes will include "learn by doing" exercises, including playing math games, building, and crafting. Ongoing social classes will include ice-breakers, interactive games, and lots of chatting to allow middle and high school students to get comfortable in their skin interacting with others.

I'm a published writer and freelance editor. I worked as a news reporter for several years. I have a Bachelor's degree in history. As a former essay reviewer for Pearson, I've scored hundreds of ACT essays as well as middle school standardized test essays. I've also taught ESL online for five years. I'm a homeschooling mama who enjoys listening to music, singing loudly, hiking, laughing with friends and family, and getting to read, hear, tell, and live a great story!
