- write their first name without a model or help
- identify at least 40 upper and lower case letters by name
- know at least 8 letter sounds
- demonstrate left-to-right reading direction
- ability to follow simple directions

If your learner cannot do the above list, this class may be too difficult.

This class may be too easy if your learner can do the following:
-know all letters and their sounds
-form all letters correctly
-can read at least 30 sight words without help and read simple cvc words with ease (ex. sit, tap, fig, etc.)

Please note, this class is a full kindergarten/ early 1st grade reading course broken into 8 week sessions. You may renew your enrollment to extend course to fit your needs. This class will NOT be canceled for low enrollment. Please contact the instructor with any questions.
Each class we will learn/review a new letter sound and how it is spelled. We will practice reading and writing the new sound in words and sentences. We will read a decodable book targeting the new sound. The books will be decodable reading leveled readers from levels, A, B, and C. We will also, reread previous texts, learn and review heart words (aka: sight words), discuss comprehension questions, complete word study activities, and engage in guided writing.

Learners will also read to the group, answer questions, and engage in group discussions.
