Welcome! As a first grade teacher for over 23 years, there is nothing I find more rewarding than helping my littles reach their academic goals. I live for those "lightbulb moments" and structure each lesson with that as my goal for all students. In this reading and writing class, students will meet once each week for 50 minute sessions. Lessons will include phonics skills/word work, high frequency word practice, vocabulary building, picture walks, and a daily reading strategy focus to build comprehension and fluency. Each reading lesson will end with a writing extension activity. Lesson 1 "Favorite Things" Reading Strategy- Summarize Writing Prompt- What do you like to do with a friend? Lesson 2 "Grandpa" Reading Strategy- Predict/Infer Writing Prompt- What can a grandpa do? Lesson 3 "School" Reading Strategy- Monitor/Clarify Writing Prompt- What is something funny that happened to you in school? Lesson 4 "Firehouse" Reading Strategy- Question Writing Prompt- Draw your own firehouse. Tell about the things in your firehouse. Lesson 5 "Trains" Reading Strategy- Analyze/Evaluate Writing Prompt- What things can a train carry? Lesson 6 "Reading" Reading Strategy- Summarize Writing Prompt- Tell about a place you like to read every day. Lesson 7 "Animal Talk" Reading Strategy- Predict/Infer Writing Prompt- What sounds do animals make? Hello Parents and Students!
My name is Lori Costa and I have been an elementary school teacher for over 24 years. In addition, I have been teaching online for three years with private, small group, and large group classes. I specialize in teaching phonics, reading, writing, and art.
I have my Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Children and the Arts. I also have my Multiple Subject Credential with CLAD emphasis.
I have three amazing kids of my own, who range in age from 10 to 19. My husband and I love to travel with our kids and make fun memories together. Trips to the beach are my favorite!
I plan to teach a variety of lessons that incorporate music, movement, art, reading and writing to reach all types of learners.
My philosophy of teaching is to make a personal connection with students throughout each lesson and encourage them every step of the way, instilling a life long love of learning!
