Guided One-On-One Reading - You Choose the Book(s)! **Scheduled by Request**

In this ongoing course, the student will pick a chapter book or series (one that they have a physical copy of) for us to read. We will take turns reading and analyze the text, pausing to discuss characters, theme, main idea, & more.

Homework
I don't ever want this book that they love to feel like "work", or turn into something they dread. If we are involved in a text analysis that the student is particularly engaged in, I might ask them to finish it on their own, however homework is not typical.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 6
I firmly believe that any child can develop a love for learning if they are given the freedom to pick books that spark their interest and curiosity. Going along with that idea, I want my student to pick out a book they'll be excited to read, but they might need some help with. They do not necessarily have to pick out books right at their reading level, but they should be able to get though a sentence without getting overly frustrated. Please contact me regarding what book you have chosen as soon as possible so I may get a copy for myself.

Typically I'll have them read a paragraph, then I'll read one and we'll keep taking turns. This 50/50 ratio may be adjusted depending on the difficulty of the text and the skill level of the child. I want them to be challenged but not frustrated.

As we read, we'll pause to discuss the learning goals below. I use an interactive Google Slide presentation to help us illustrate our ideas as needed. For example, if we are analyzing character traits, we might work on a circle map together, or a compare-and-contrast thinking map.

This is an ongoing class scheduled for once per week, however more days can be added by signing up for more sections. Sections will made available by request.

**If your child has a friend/sibling or two that would like to join in with us, I'm happy to accommodate more learners at a discounted rate. Please message me for details.**
Learning Goals
My number one learning goal is to help facilitate the love for reading. There is nothing more valuable in my opinion!
As we reflect upon the text we will be reinforcing the following concepts:

-Examining the development of characters, comparing and contrasting
-Reviewing main idea and detail
-Summarizing what we've read
-Discussing setting and themes
-Discussing opinions as well as inferences we can make from the text
-Finding Figurative Language
-Making predictions

All of these concepts will help with the overall skill of being able to have meaningful discussions about books, fostering confidence in themselves as they continue to do this in other situations throughout their school careers.
