Class Experience

Grumble grumble! Does your learner often complain when faced with every day challenges in life? Did the burger she ordered come with pickles when she asked for no pickles? Did he have a great day at the amusement park until one ride was closed and now he thinks the whole day was bad?

In this class, students will discuss what happens when we face challenges in life. We will explore different ways people respond to challenges and how some of our responses (such as complaining, wishing the challenge away, yelling, getting angry, etc) don't help us solve the problem. We'll talk about how our thoughts about challenges impact how we feel and how we act. We'll look at the differences between positive and negative mindsets. Finally, your student will use scenarios to practice reframing things into a positive mindset when we face hurdles in life, looking for both the bad (which is often easy to spot) and the good (which we can get better at with practice).

Learning Goals

Students will be aware of different mindsets and how these impact the way we respond to challenges. Students will learn to reframe the view of a situation from a negative mindset to a positive mindset.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Angie. For the past four years, I’ve taught English online while providing home education to my son who is currently a 5th grader. I have a master’s degree in social work and have also taken three years of doctorate level courses in pursuit of a PhD in Early Childhood Education. For several years, I taught child development classes to aspiring teachers at the collegiate level. In my career, I’ve also been a child and family therapist, helping children and their families tackle emotional and mental health concerns. I’ve worked with children in many capacities and am passionate about helping students learn and thrive in a variety of ways. I strongly believe learning should be fun, and I strive to always create an upbeat, positive learning environment. Who says you can’t learn and be silly at the same time?!

Outside of teaching, my hobbies include photography, martial arts, reading, and gaming with my family. I live at the beach in Florida with my husband Erick (also an Outschool teacher!), our science-loving son, and our cuddly cat.

If you would like to sign up for a class but the listed times don't work with your learner's schedule, please send me a message stating the class(es) you'd like to book as well as dates and times that work for you. I will do my best to accommodate scheduling requests.
