Class Experience
What is Growth Mindset? Growth mindset believes that learners can develop abilities through effort and hard work. The class will be learning and developing a growth mindset through open ended math task and learning math practices. What is an open ended math task? They are tasks that students can use to solve problems in a variety of ways. Did you know there are problems that can be solved more than one way? The learners will go through the challenges and solve the task in a way that fits them. Whether it be hand on, visual or auditory learning. The learners will learn how to do think alouds, ask questions, share how they solved the tasks and reflect what went well or any mistakes. These are called math practices. Many learners are scared to make mistakes. But mistakes help us learn and become better at what we want to do. That is why the reflection piece is very important. We will do the mathematical practices each week during the math tasks. The learners can share these by recordings in the classroom or upload them to the classroom posts, write out the math practice task then take a screenshot to share it in the classroom. The interaction piece is up to the learners to share by recording a video, typing in the classroom or uploading a handwritten sheet. Every Monday for the 4 weeks, I will post 3 to 5 different math tasks in the classroom. The students will choose one of the math task and create their answer to share it in the classroom. They may choose to do more than one math task but they are only required to complete one. The math tasks will be for a variety of abilities. I will create mini lesson videos every week to explain the mathematical practices and challenges. The videos will be upload onto youtube to be viewed by the students. I will also be available to answer any questions. Here are the math objectives we will cover each week. Each week the learner will need to pick one task, watch the mini lesson, and complete the task using the practices. The learners will share by recording a video of how they solved the problem or the handwritten work. Week 1 - Number Sense Number sense is working with numbers. It includes: more and less, understanding symbols (1, 2, 3, etc), counting, etc. Week 2 - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division The students will continue their number sense by using the symbols to practice adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. Week 3 - Geometry, Patterns and Shapes The learners will discover the world of geometry using patterns and shapes. Week 4 - Money The class will learn the names of the coins, the worth of each coin and how to count coins. Mastery of the concept is not needed and this will be used for an introduction if they are not familiar with coins. This is a flexible schedule class with NO live classes. The class is 4 weeks long with posts Monday through Friday. I will post the assignments on Monday and the students have until Friday to post the finished assignment.
