Class Experience

Developing a growth mindset is so valuable in developing skills such as creativity, problem-solving, resilience, learning from mistakes, trying new things, goal-setting, overcoming challenges, managing emotions, mindfulness, and gratitude. Let's take a little time out of our week to step back from the academics and the rush of our schedule to focus on some life skills. This class will utilize a combination of different activities and book discussions to engage many different learning styles using movement, art, crafts, music, and breathing.

My classroom is a welcoming and encouraging environment where everyone is welcome and given the opportunity to ask questions, make connections, and interact with each other. We will have planned activities and discussion topics. However, our schedule may fluctuate based on the response of the class to a certain topic. If they are really connecting an example to their lives and we need to spend more time on it, I am flexible to make our experience most meaningful to them.

Some activities will require specific supplies to be gathered ahead of time or involvement from the family in between sessions. Each family must purchase a copy of "The Growth Mindset Activity Kit" to access their printables. This class is part 3 of 3, when we are approaching the end of the semester any future classes will first be opened as a private section so this group has the first chance to stay together for future classes. This "Kit" will be used for all 3 semesters.

Tentative schedule:

Week 1) My Special Memories Tree (Activity 25)
Week 2) Read aloud & discussion
Week 3) Weekly Sunshine Report (Activity 22)
Week 4) Read aloud & discussion

I have 6 years of experience as a classroom special education teacher, 20 years of experience as a tutor, and 5 years of experience as a homeschool mom. In all 3 of these settings, I have seen firsthand how a child's mindset can make or break their road to success. I found Big Life Journal and their amazing resources as a homeschool mom and have been using them with my own children but also want to offer this as a group experience for the 2020 school year!
