Growing Aspiring Writers in Writers' Workshop

Writers will receive guided writing practice each week to inspire them to write about a topic that matters to them. Mini-lessons provide powerful tools for learning and thinking. Confidence in writing opens doors for learners.

What's included

1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be encouraged to spend an additional 30 minutes- 1 hour each week practicing what is learned.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this ongoing writing course, students will be provided a new writing prompt each week to inspire the weekly writing entry. A short mini-lesson will explain a writing skill focus for the week and include teacher modeling.   Students will be provided writing time each session and will be able to share a chosen portion of the weekly writing skill practice with one another.  The weekly lesson will inspire students to continue writing independently outside of the class time.  If a student shares any writing done outside of the session with the teacher in the classroom, the student will receive feedback from the teacher.

Writing prompt: why write?
Mini-lesson: process and traits
Week two:
Writing Prompt: The value of keeping lists
Mini-lesson  Cubing strategy to explore a topic idea
Week three:
Writing Prompt: Brainstorming personal treasures with an alphabet list
Mini-lesson: Including sensory details 
Week four: 
Writing Prompt: positive and negative life events
Mini-lesson:: Focus on an important moment
Week five: 
Writing Prompt: Photo writing
Mini-lesson: Using figurative language to create imagery
Week six:
Writing Prompt: What's going on in the world?
Mini-lesson: Choosing a writing purpose / audience / topic
Week of seven:
Writing Prompt: Reflective writing on a famous quotation
Mini-lesson: Creating a story to match the theme

Other Details

Supply List
Learners may complete the writing electronically or with paper and pencil.  Some weeks, a paper and pencil completion will better meet the needs of the assignment. Students should have paper and pen/pencil available each week during the session.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
