This course will be an in depth exploration into the concept of a Growth Mindset. Learners will build skills and be taught effective strategies to help them be more successful in their goals. When they know their brains are capable of growing, and that they can get smarter through hard work, they become more confident and willing to take more risks in their learning. Through the use of engaging activities and discussion, learners will understand the key elements needed to establish a Growth Mindset in the classroom (or while learning at home.) Session 1: Introduction to Growth Mindset and the difference between a Growth and Fixed Mindset. We will also discuss the brain and how it can grow and strengthen when facing challenges in new learning. Learners will have the opportunity to share examples of times they overcame a challenge when learning something new. Session 2: This class will focus on identifying Fixed/Growth Mindsets in ourselves and others (fictional situations in the classroom). We will discuss what a Growth Mindset looks, feels, and sounds like. Session 3: This class will begin with the teacher (Ms. Parrotta) sharing personal experiences of a Fixed Mindset when learning something challenging, and brainstorm solutions as a group. We will discuss positive feelings, set learning goals, and discuss "The Power of Yet." Session 4: Practicing a Growth Mindset- learners will create problem solving plans to help them overcome future challenges when new learning arises. To finish our course, learners will practice fun brain break activities as a group.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a teacher for many years, this is always one of the first concepts I teach my students- well before any academic lessons. Teaching children how to achieve a Growth Mindset is often the positive foundation for learning to occur. Students tend to be more open-minded and willing to take risks, and they usually feel better about challenging themselves and making mistakes.
