Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner Level
This class is designed for students who want to learn to sing. No previous experience is needed! Students will be taught to use musical terminology. Simple musical concepts will be introduced. Students should expect to sing and engage in listening activities throughout the entire class. The focus of this class is not to learn complete songs, but to lay the foundation of proper vocal habits. The class is social and structured based on a voice lesson.

Join any time! Students do not need to attend previous lessons to understand or participate in class. Students may or may not sing in front of each other depending on the individual's comfort level.

I want students to leave this class feeling more confident.

The class will begin with introductions and a brief guided conversation. We will do some stretching and breathing exercises while I remind the students to have a good posture. Learning to have breath control is fundamentally important for young singers. Then we will sing simple vocal warmups. Students will sing together along with me as I play piano. Proper vocal care will be emphasized in each class. Singing will be taught from a classical perspective.

After warmups, students may have ear-training exercises or play games that correspond with the musical concept taught. I usually use slides to teach and indicate what we are doing in the class. Many singers do not know much about music theory. However, I believe it is important for singers to understand the foundations of music theory because singers are musicians, too! The concept taught may be reinforced with a coloring page, worksheet, or printable flashcards depending on the lesson content. Lessons repeat every 24 weeks.

I minored in vocal music and have been teaching voice lessons since I was in high school. I have taught children's choirs and private voice lessons. Several years ago I recorded a cd, and I sing at my church on a weekly basis. I also have experience teaching English as a second language (ESL). I would be happy to accommodate students who are learning English.
