In this 8 week class, we will learn sitting and hand positions at the piano, as well as basic musical concepts. The piano book I am using is appropriate for ages 7-10 and the student will move at a slow pace at first as they learn the notes and fingering. The theory book will reinforce the thinking skills through reading and writing activities. Music theory tells the "why". I am a very patient and interactive teacher who will make even a shy child feel comfortable. The student will learn notes, fingering, music terms (such as forte-loud and piano-soft). They will also learn note values. That is, to say, how many beats does a whole, half, quarter, and eighth note have. In addition, music develops recall that will stimulate the brain in many other areas of life. Lesson 1: Proper Sitting Position, Hand Position , Finger Numbers and Flashcard Practice, Off Keyboard Fingering Activity Lesson 2; Left hand on White Keys with The Pecking Rooster, Right Hand on White Keys- The Pecking Hen, 2 and 3 Black keys practice Lesson 3: Three Black Keys activity, Quarter Note (TA), Right then Left Hand practice, The Walking Song (right and left hands) Fingertip check Lesson 4: Eyes on Music awareness, 5 black keys playing, Saying finger numbers or words, The Half Note *TA-AH , off keyboard fingering and counting. Lesson 5: Dynamics - "Forte " (LOUD) and "piano" (soft). These are Italian words that are used in music. Right and Left hand play I Hear the Echo and learn the rhythm pattern. Lesson 6: Whole Note value (TA-Ah-Ah-Ah), Forte and Piano Review, Old MacDonald Had a Song, Repeat Sign Lesson 7:The Musical Alphabet, Learning C-D-E on the white keys, Merrily We Roll Along and Playing a Step Lesson 8: Learning F-G-A-B on the white keys, C-D-E-F-G March, C 5-Finger Scale, What is a Measure? ****This is just an overview of the goals for each week. Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught children preschool through high school for over 25 years. I have a Bachelor's in Music Education with an emphasis in voice, and have played piano since I was 9 years old. I enjoyed accompanying many of my fellow Music majors for their juries (finals) in college. Knowing the basics gives children the confidence to pursue their favorite instrument and that's an amazing gift. I am patient and encouraging and love to engage with my students in a very positive way. I look forward to teaching your child.
