25 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1 hour per week. Students will be asked to practice at home, what they've learned in class but they will not be tested or graded.Class Experience
In this course, the students will learn about Capoeira from Brazil via music and dance. This is a fun introduction to the basic movements of Capoeira modified for children. You can expect children to get a full workout while they practice body coordination, awareness, and mobility exercises. We will always start the class with a time-in. The time-in is a moment for everyone to bring their attention and focus to our class by stretching and breathing together. After we are warmed up, we will do exercises or drills standard to capoeira training ie. frog hops, gorilla walk, and crab walk. We'll then practice our foundational move, the ginga. Each week we will learn new capoeira basics and acrobatic techniques. Students will learn how to play and maneuver in a roda (wheel/circle). We will also learn lyrics and translations of simple capoeira songs. My teaching style is very intuitive. I try my best to read the energy and comprehension levels of the students. I adjust my lessons according to that reading. Overall, I try my best to make the lessons fun and interesting. During class, students will be muted. This helps with the sound quality and for the video to always be on the teacher so everyone can view the steps at all times. If there is a question, the student can always raise their hand and I will unmute the student or type in their question in the chat area. We will have moments during warm-ups and discussions where students will be able to interact. Towards the end of class, they’re welcome to ask questions. *Great option for those that homeschool looking for arts or P.E. option as it fulfills all of the requirements for P.E. standards. Parental Guidance
We regularly practice balancing and acrobatic exercises. Please have open space approximately 6 X 8 ft on the floor for the learners to move around freely.
I recommend a carpeted area, yoga mat, or gymnastics mats.
*I remind students in class that these moves should only be used when practicing capoeira. Capoeira should not be used to harm another person.
Capoeira is a martial art developed during the period of slavery in Brazil. Its roots, music, movement, and theories are based on the African and Afro-Brazilian experiences during these times. I'm not an expert in this history so I don't go into the topics in-depth but I do briefly discuss them throughout lessons. I mainly highlight capoeira's origins and the reason why martial art is disguised with dance and music.
Supply List
Students are asked to wear clothing comfortable to move in. For example joggers, leggings, and t-shirts, etc. Ideally, nothing too baggy as it will be difficult to see the motions. T-shirts should be fitted or tucked into pants to avoid shirt coming up during inversions. NO DRESSES OR SKIRTS. Please keep an easy access water bottle nearby during class.
