In this 7 week course, students will read various fairy tales from 'The Grimm's Fairy Tales' collection. Students have the opportunity to read tales on their own and discuss during the first 5 minutes of class with one another. Students will be instructed to write a 4 sentence summary of their independently read tale and teacher will provide feedback on writing skills. These are possible text selections for each week. I have the full addition to the book so I try to read tales that would be new to learners and Week 1: 'Little Brother and Little Sister', 'The Hare and the Hedgehog', 'Rapunzel' Week 2: 'Cinderella', 'The Riddle', & 'The Crystal Ball' Week 3: 'The Donkey',' 'Clever Hans', & 'Clever Elsie' Week 4: 'The Wedding of Mrs. Fox', 'The Elves', & 'The Robber Bridegroom' Week 5: 'Thumbling's Travels', 'The Goose Girl at the Well', ''Maid Maleen' Week 6: 'The Six Swans', 'The Sleeping Beauty (Briar Rose), 'Little Snow White' Week 7: 'Rumpelstiltskin' & 'The Frog King' 5 Minutes- Discuss stories that were read independently from 'Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales'. Introduce the stories that will be read in class today and provide students with thought provoking questions to assist in identifying the central idea/theme of the story after completion. 5-35 Minutes- Read the chosen stories for the class period. Teacher will stop regularly to check comprehension and ask students to make predictions as to the ending of the story Teacher will provide students with questions on the literary elements to strengthen their ability to analyze text on a more abstract level. 35-45 Minutes- Wrap up the readings for the day, ask students to discuss what they thought the theme of each tales was, and have students make comparisons between the texts for a deeper understanding of plot and characterization.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This collection of fairy tales is known for endings that some readers may not see as ‘happy’ as some tales can have scary conclusions. As an experienced classroom teacher, I choose tales that are appropriate for the learners but for independent reading parents can ask me for a list of tales for their learner that are PG rather than PG13.
