Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
Learn to read and pronounce Greek word parts. Learn the English definition and grammatical application of the new vocabulary (prefix, root, suffix). Discuss examples of how the Greek word parts are used to "build" and define English words. "Collect" the word in a personalized build-as-you-go vocabulary journal.
The teacher is an award-winning author, freelance journalist and professional editor with a Master's Degree. Her background includes: corporate training, in-classroom K-12 teacher, SAT test essay grading and ESL instruction for both children and adults, and seven years of homeschooling.
2 files available upon enrollmentStudents will need to bring a pen/pencil to class and print TWO of the My Greek Word Collection worksheet and ONE Passport of Progress.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be asked to repeat, restate, and otherwise confirm and apply their knowledge while in class through verbal, visual, and/or written evidence. Optional homework tasks may be given such as finding a way to incorporate a new word into their writing or conversations or completing a worksheet if they were unable to finish during the class time. Students will be asked to review their vocabulary as they go.
50 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
Some of the vocabulary tasks may include terminology related to medical, biological, physical, or other social science fields. While the overall terms may be long and outside the scope of the student's grade-level reading, the primary focus will remain on recognizing the shorter Greek component WITHIN the longer term. Some terms may prompt difficult questions for some children, which are not appropriate for in-class discussion in a mixed-grade population. Follow-up conversations with teachers or parents are expected and students will be guided to speak with their parents if such things come up. The teacher accepts no responsibility for explaining concepts further than their basic definitions or she will strive to express no opinions on such terms. Greek Weekly Class Rules: 1. Enrolled Students Only. 2. Cameras Stay On. 3. Quiet Spaces (mics muted if there is background noise). 4. Kind Words Only.
