US Grade 4 - 6
When a student takes this class they can expect a fun and interactive journey through the story of how Hercules captured the man eating Mares of Diomedes. Class will first begin with a short meet-and-greet. Once acquainted, we will delve into a dramatic telling of some of Hercules' exploits. Images and some video will be shared to help bring the story to life and as the storyteller, my goal will be to use my theatrical and voice-artist background to make the tale memorable. Throughout, students will be encouraged to ask questions and will also be posed questions to test their listening and comprehension skills. Specifically, we will learn interesting details about the Mares of Diomedes, Hercules warring with Diomedes, the death of Abderus, the death of Diomedes, and finally the presenting of the mares to Eurystheus.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about Hercules, Eurystheus, Copreus, Diomedes, his Mares (Podargos, Lampon, Xanthos, and Deinos), Abderus, Hera, Zeus, and Alexander the Great. Students will be encouraged to speak, ask questions, and be questioned themselves with a focus on comprehension skills and critical thinking.

It should be noted that this particular tale is quite gruesome, as it contains horses that eat the flesh of any human unfortunate to cross their path. In the tale the stables are described as being splattered with the blood of their victims. The story includes several instances where the horses eat both companions and enemies of Hercules.
