Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
When a student takes this class they can expect a fun and interactive journey through the story of how Hercules fetched the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. Class will first begin with a short meet-and-greet. Once acquainted, we will delve into a dramatic telling of some of Hercules' exploits. Images and some video will be shared to help bring the story to life and as the storyteller, my goal will be to use my theatrical and voice-artist background to make the tale memorable. Throughout, students will be encouraged to ask questions and will also be posed questions to test their listening and comprehension skills. Class sizes are kept small to ensure students are given ample opportunity to interact with the teacher and are encouraged to keep microphones on (if surroundings are quiet) so they may freely communicate. Specifically, we will learn about Hercules' journey to first find the Garden of the Hesperides, Hercules vs. Cycnus the son of Ares, Ares attacking Hercules in a fit of vengeful rage, Hercules' wrestling match against Antaeus the son of Poseidon, Hercules' escape from Busiris, Hercules freeing Prometheus, Hercules bearing the weight of the world in Atlas' stead, and finally, how Hercules tricked Atlas to spare himself an eternity of torment by using his brain and not his brawn.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about Hercules, Eurystheus, Copreus, Ares, Athena, Hera, Zeus, Cycnus, Busiris, Prometheus, Atlas and his daughters the Hesperides. Students will be encouraged to speak, ask questions, and be questioned themselves with a focus on comprehension skills and critical thinking.
