This is a 10 week Flex class that will cover the gods and monsters used as characters in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. We will be going out of order of character appearance in the book so it is best that the student has read the book first. I will posting classwork every Monday at 9am EST. There will be a link to a YouTube video with my lecture on it, as this system does not allow large files to be loaded. I will also be sending along worksheets with readings, exercises, and...
Students will be learning about Greek mythology and their place in history.
I have a degree in History as well as passed my teacher's license test in Massachusetts. I use my love of History and facts to help children understand that history is conceived of real people who did real things. I found Social Studies class boring as a child because the teachers concentrated mostly on dates and statistics rather than the humans behind the events. I use pop culture to help kids resonate with the ideas and events of the past.
We will be having handouts, quizzes, and papers revolving around the "characters" and their relationships in the book and in mythology itself.
I will be giving a letter grade for the quizzes, and handouts. I will be giving an informal assessment on the writings.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This is based on Greek Mythology so there is talk of gods, humans and others mating as well as violence. Nothing too gratuitous.
Prerequisite: Percy Jackson: The Lighting Thief We will be covering the characters out of order so it's best that the book is read beforehand.
Using my love for pop/geek culture to encourage the love of learning.
