Description
Class Experience
In this course, students will: 1) Use Greek and Latin roots to find the meaning of new vocabulary words. 2) Use Greek and Latin roots to explain the structure of English and other languages. 3) Identify how the cultures of Greece and Rome have influenced their culture.
Students will be practicing the skills we learned at least once after each class meeting, including (but not limited to): -Dictionary skills practice -Root word vocabulary practice -Short passages on Greek & Roman myths or history, using root word vocabulary Work outside of class will take 1 hour or less.
Learners will need the following items: -A device that can read PDF files (for HW assignments). -A notebook for recording in-class (and HW) exercises. -A pen or pencil -A pack of 3 x 5 index cards. -1 large Ziploc bag (for storing index cards) -Red & green markers or colored pencils
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
There will be weekly vocabulary checks to monitor student understanding and a creative writing project to evaluate root word applications. Time for working on project in-class will be provided. Percentage scores (letter grades) will be available upon request.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
--To assess student comprehension of root use, I will be utilizing the Kahoot app weekly. Students must have access to a second device for Kahoot. I will be using screen share for the Kahoot questions. --Dictionary.com will be screen shared to demonstrate the application of etymologies in the English language. Some students may be asked to look up definitions on Dictionary.com in class or for homework.
