Oh, no! Tom the Turkey lives on a peaceful turkey farm most of the year. That is, until it's time for the meal all turkeys fear..Thanksgiving dinner! Tom is set on escaping from his farm to make sure he doesn't end up in the feast this year! In this high-energy, exciting escape room style class, learners will work together to help Tom escape the farm and make it to the wild. Each step of his grand escape plan leads to a different math or ELA question, which learners will solve to advance to the next slide. Each question they answer correctly allows them to help Tom make it one step closer to freedom! Please note that this is a casual, team-based class, so it is okay if your learner needs some help with the questions or concepts - we are going to have fun while practicing or reviewing skills. Questions will be either math or ELA based, but mastery is not required. I will both lead students through answering the questions as needed, and facilitate the escape room play. Students will be able to work together to come up with an answer to each question, truly working as a team to save Tom! Sample questions: Which number is greater: 126 or 241? What is the answer to this addition or subtraction problem? (double digit) Bar graph anazlying (which had the most responses, etc) Does this word have a long or short vowel sound? Which spelling of this word is correct? Name a word that rhymes with... Time spent on the escape activity will vary from class to class depending on learners' abilities, time taken to solve problems, etc. If we escape with time left in class, we will complete a simple scavenger hunt (no supplies needed) or would you rather game and discuss something we are thankful for.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding and be provided with practice on a number of math and ELA skills, including: double digit addition, subtraction, place value, comparing, reading graphs, digraphs, blends, long or short vowels, spelling rules, and more. This class is highly interactive and engaging, with students participating in cooperation with their peers. Students will also be presented with opportunities to practice discussion and oral language skills.
