Hundred-Word Horror Stories
Great Short Stories of Science Fiction: Asimov, Bujold, Le Guin, and Keyes
Class experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate Level
Science fiction as a genre has a long history with the medium of short story. It also has a long history wrestling with difficult and sensitive topics. As a kind of speculative fiction, SciFi asks questions that might otherwise be taboo. Come and join me to read four great short stories from 1941-1989. Each one has deep and disturbing themes which may lead us to question our own society and our role in it. Week 1: Students should read "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov before coming to class. ...
Students will explore ethics, the short story form, and learn about several very important figures in Science Fiction.
Homework Offered
For the first three weeks students will read the short stories before class and interact with the material through creative writing.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
A grade can be assigned to learners if parents contact me ahead of time. Reading and participation is weighted at (50%) and their completion of homework at (50%). I am more interested in creativity and ideas than grammar and spelling.Grades Offered
The students will need to read the following short stories: "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov (available as a free download), "Flowers for Algernon" the short story by Daniel Keyes (available as a free download), "Mountains of Mourning" by Lois McMasters Bujold (available on Kindle for 3.99) and "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" by Ursula Le Guin (available as a free download).
These short stories are full of sensitive topics including the value of low vs high intelligence, disability, what it means to be a human being, genetic disorders, guilt, the role of religion in society, scapegoatism, abuse, sex outside of marriage, murder, infanticide, and more. In no way is any of the language graphic or erotic. As a teacher, I approach all these things as an opportunity to explore ethics and good character. However, you should consider previewing these short stories to see if they are appropriate for your learner. (Please leave me a message with any questions! I'll be happy to discuss these questions before your learner begins the class.)
