US Grade 1 - 2
Every week I will read a new story by Leo Lionni. These are wonderful stories that will be enjoyed, and help your child participate and learn about story elements. Understanding the story elements in books is key to learning comprehension. The students will listen to new story by Leo Lionni every week. Students will learn about the parts of stories that will help with comprehension. Students will actively participate in discussions about the book and the parts of the stories. Students will have an opportunity to express their feelings about the books. Students will be able to focus on answering the questions that begin with who, what, where, why, when, and how.
Homework OfferedFirst Class/Week 1- Draw and color a picture of the characters in the story using your either your crayons, markers, or pencils. Second Class/Week 2- Draw and color a picture of the setting of the story. Third Class/Week 3- Draw and color a picture of the beginning, middle, and ending of the story. Fourth Class/Week 4-Draw and color a picture of the main idea or author's purpose. The book Tico and the Golden Wings has such a beautiful message! Drawing and coloring is a great way to respond to books. This is a way to show understanding of a lesson that was taught.
If you decide to do the optional activity after class, you will need supplies for drawing and coloring. You might want to try watercolors if you have them too. Leo Lionni loved using watercolors in his illustrations.
