Class Experience

Learners write notes of gratitude to a loved one or to themselves to show their appreciations and pride. We first brainstorm together to whom we could write and what sorts of things the person might like to read, or what would feel good to read yourself in a week, a month, or a year from now. Then we spend some time writing together, with the teacher available to support sounding out words and phrasing ideas in creative ways. Finally, we use reused materials and glue or Mod Podge to decorate the jar to make a cheery and original gift that can be treasured for years to come.

A gratitude practice is scientifically shown to correlate with improved health, outlook, and relationships. https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/in-praise-of-gratitude

My teaching style is inclusive, warm, student-directed, and organised. We check in at the beginning with names and pronouns and a little bit about ourselves. Then we go over expectations and practice using the "mute" button to make sure one person speaks at a time, and everyone is heard. I make sure everyone gets the chance to ask questions and share their ideas and art. Learner-learner interaction is encouraged. I should talk less than everyone else.

There is no prior experience or knowledge required for this class. If a child is not comfortable writing letters yet, they are welcome to draw their ideas on each slip.
Learning Goals
Students will use original, specific, "juicy" adjectives and verbs to communicate their feelings in a clear way. They will share their ideas with others and end class with a heart full of warm fuzzies!
