Class Experience

This class is perfect for students who have just finished Algebra 1 or 2. Students will learn how to use their graphing calculator to more effectively and efficiently graph and answer questions about functions. They will learn how to use the 'Y=' and 'GRAPH' function in their calculator to graph equations. Students will then use the functions to find zeros, minimums, and maximums. Students will also learn how to use the TABLE function to make a table of values for a given function.

I will guide the student through the steps and buttons to push to answer these questions and make the calculator 'work' for them. Direct instruction will occur using a slideshow with pictures of the buttons and what the calculator should look like at each step in the process. Then I will use the 'I do. We do. You do.' teaching method using my own calculator along with the students, who will be using their own, through multiple examples. I will also give them the chance to practice on their own while I am assisting them in troubleshooting any errors they might encounter. We will address how to use the ZOOM function on the calculator to make sure the calculator shows the most important aspects of the graph.

This class will also be a good review of equation of lines, parabolas, and polynomials, and graphing system of equations.

Before class, students should be familiar with the equations and graphs of lines and parabolas. They do not necessarily need to know zero, minimum or maximum.
Students must have one of the following (working and charged) calculators:
TI-83
TI-83 Plus
TI-84
TI-84 Plus
TI-84 Plue CE
*Any color or special edition (i.e. Silver Edition) is fine.
Learning Goals
Students will use their TI Graphing Calculator to:
-Graph lines, parabolas, polynomials and other functions.
-Find the zeros, minimums and maximums of a function .
-Find the intersection point of two functions.
-Find a table of values.

I know what it feels like to face hard problems in math that can seem impossible. It’s frustrating that no matter what you do, it still seems hard to comprehend. I’m here, with five years of experience as a certified classroom teacher, ten years as a tutor, and three years experience as an online ESL teacher to help students build the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Elementary Education in 2012, both from Truman State University in Missouri. In over five+ years of teaching I’ve taught six different grade levels and eight different math classes. I've taught math classes from 7th Math to AP Calculus. For the past ten years, throughout college and my professional career I have continued to tutor students of all ages and needs.

It would be an honor to meet, teach your child, and help them develop into strong confident problem-solvers ready to use math in everyday life.
